Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. Her aunt was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware by her mother. While DuVernay lived living in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house for a specific Jury member. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
